BLEACH, COLOURANT & TONER
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

BLEACH

Bleach is formulated to solely remove pigment from the hair. The mixed product firstly opens the hair cuticles and then lightens the natural pigment that sits in the cortex (centre) of the hair. The end colour result is dependent on your natural shade and the development time.

COLOURANT

Colourants work differently to bleach. Instead of removing colour, a colourant will deposit colour under the cuticles in the cortex of the hair. Colourants can come in various forms from permanent, to semi-permanent and then temporary. If you have naturally dark hair you won’t be able to achieve a lighter colour by using a colourant.

TONER

Toners work in a similar way to colourant by depositing colour onto the hair. Toners are used on naturally light or pre-lightened hair to improve its tone by either removing unwanted tones or balancing colour. A colour toner can also add new colour such as silver or pink.

ARE YOU A FIRST TIME BLEACHER?

We understand the thought of bleaching your own hair for the first time may seem a little daunting, so we’ve put together a helpful check list to make sure you are fully prepared.

  • Complete a strand and skin test a few days prior to bleaching your hair.
  • Don’t wash your hair the day you are going to bleach it. The natural oils from your scalp keep the hair and scalp moisturised and protect during the bleaching process.
  • Get a trim, your hair needs to be healthy before bleaching so, trimming away split ends will not only make your hair healthier but also improve the finished bleach look.
  • Your hair needs to be in healthy condition so make sure you use a good conditioner in the weeks prior to bleaching. You should also condition your hair immediately after bleaching.

HOW SHOULD YOU CARE FOR HAIR ONCE IT'S BEEN BLEACHED?

Once you have bleached your hair and achieved the desired colour, you’ll want to make sure you keep it looking its best. Follow our simple tips for caring for your hair after bleaching.

  • Don’t wash your hair every day, this takes all of the moisture out of your hair and can leave it feeling dry and brittle.
  • Use a deep conditioning mask once a week, this will help to replenish your hair.
  • Always use a heat protector spray when using heated styling devices.
  • Protect your hair from the sun and ensure you use UV protection products.
  • Get regular hair trims to avoid split ends and keep your hair looking and feeling healthy.

WHY BLEACH YOUR HAIR AT HOME?

  • More convenient - relax in the comfort of your own home during the development time, rather than being stuck in a salon chair.
  • Being in control - the strand test will allow you to determine your own personal development time, ensuring the overall outcome is the shade you desire.
  • Value for money - You can pick up a Bblonde Maximum Blonding Kit for as little at £5.99 and still know you are using a professionally formulated product.
  • Learning a new skill - once you’ve mastered how to bleach your hair once you will always want to do it yourself just because of how simple it is.

TIPS AND TRICKS

  • If your hair is long or thick try holding some layers of hair up with cotton wool balls, this will allow air to circulate through the hair during development, producing a more even tone.
  • Do not put your hair in a tight bun or clip. The hair in the centre of the bun or clip may process faster and create an uneven result, it could even over process the hair.
  • Body heat can help the development of your colour, so try wrapping cling film around your hair to keep in that natural warmth. However, be sure not to expose your hair to any other forms of heat during the development process, such as direct sunlight, this can cause overheating and can be damaging for your hair.
  • If you are an avid swimmer you might notice green hues develop in your hair caused by the exposure to chlorine, apply ketchup to your hair prior to washing - trust us – this works!
  • Is your hair feeling a little dry? Shampoo, condition and instead of a final rinse with water – simply use carbonated water for more moisturised hair!
  • When creating an Ombré look try gently back combing the hair where you want the Ombré effect to start, this will create a soft merge of colour between your two tones.
